Alexander & Michelle started playing in 2021.

  • What do you like most about playing music?
Alexander: Most likes the sound of it when heโ€™s playing well.

Michelle: Likes the meditative feeling of playingโ€”itโ€™s maybe the one time of the day when she can tune everything else out and be in the moment.

  • How often/what inspires you to practice?

Alexander: It is his Mom, who tells him he has to each day!

City Ballet โ€œThe Spellโ€

You are invited to a world premiere of โ€œThe Spellโ€, a new fantasy ballet by choreographer Danielle Horochowski and composer Arshak Sirunyan will premiere May 13th and 14st at The Maryland Theatre. The ballet will feature Oscar Sanchez and Nicole Graniero from The Washington Ballet, dancers from The City Ballet School, and 28 musicians from the Maryland Symphony Orchestra (MSO). The premiere of โ€œThe Spellโ€ introduces 100 minutes of new classical music and offers the unique opportunity to hear and see the ballet performed live for the first time. โ€œArshak put in all the bells and whistles to create the magic for this story,โ€ says Elizabeth Schulze, conductor for the MSO. โ€œTo have this opportunity to be involved with a brand new ballet and score is rare. It is historic.โ€

Perfect for an audience of all ages, The Spell is a new full length fantasy story ballet based on a Grimmโ€™s fairytale tale of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses". Danielle Horochowski partnered with Arshak Sirunyan to create โ€œThe Spellโ€ who wrote the score he describes as โ€œhaunting, magical, and fun.โ€  Arshak Sirunyan has independently composed and produced jazz albums and contemporary ballet music since 2007 and is excited to premiere his first full length ballet.

Four years in the making, the world premiere of this ballet will make Horochowski one of the first women to stage a full-length ballet with an original score. For her part, Schulze is also a rare breed. Females comprise only 10 percent of professional conductors.

Guests artists Nicole Graniero and Oscar Sanchez will dance the lead roles for The Spell. Nicole Graniero has danced fifteen seasons as a company member and guest artist with The American Ballet Theatre and currently dances for The Washington Ballet. She will dance the principal role of โ€œEliseโ€ in The Spell.  Oscar Sanchez is in his seventh season with The Washington Ballet following his work with The National Ballet of Cuba and Columbia City Ballet.
