What will I learn in guitar lessons at the Academy?

In guitar lessons, you will learn a variety of skills and techniques that will help you become a proficient guitarist. Here are some key areas you can expect to learn in guitar lessons:

Proper technique: You'll learn how to hold and position the guitar, use proper hand and finger placement, and develop good picking and strumming techniques.

Music theory: Understanding basic music theory concepts such as scales, chords, and rhythm will help you understand the structure of music and apply it to the guitar.

Chords and chord progressions: You'll learn different chords and how to play them in various positions on the guitar neck. You'll also learn common chord progressions used in different genres of music.

Fingerstyle and strumming patterns: You'll practice different fingerstyle techniques and strumming patterns to create rhythm and texture in your playing.

Reading guitar tabs and notation: You'll learn to read guitar tablature (tabs) and standard music notation, allowing you to learn and play songs accurately.

Guitar scales and improvisation: You'll explore scales and learn how to use them for improvisation and creating guitar solos.

Song repertoire: You'll work on learning and playing songs from different genres, such as rock, pop, blues, folk, and more. This helps you apply your skills in a musical context and develop your own playing style.

Music appreciation: You'll deepen your understanding and appreciation for different guitarists, styles, and genres of music.

Guitar maintenance and care: Your instructor may provide guidance on guitar maintenance, including tuning, string changing, and basic repairs.

Performance skills: Guitar lessons often include performance opportunities, such as recitals or jam sessions, to help you build confidence, stage presence, and musical communication.

Remember, the specific focus and curriculum of guitar lessons may vary depending on your goals, the teacher's approach, and your skill level. It's always a good idea to discuss your interests and objectives with your guitar teacher to tailor the lessons to your needs.

Are There Recitals?

Absolutely! In December and June, our students get the chance to showcase their talent at an exiting venue with a Steinway Grand piano. We don't believe in charging our students any performance fees, and the admission is completely free. So you can invite as many guests as you’d like.

Student Testimonial:

“Nearly my entire family takes lessons at Chevy Chase Arts Academy, and we could not be happier with our experience. Our youngest, 8, has been progressing and enjoying the piano for months now. Her instructor, Manuel De La Luz, is patient and inspiring, and gives perfect feedback. Our other daughter and I take guitar from Arnell Byrd, who is both effortlessly cool and also teaches theory in an accessible way.

Levon Mikailean, the founder, has been extremely supportive in making our family musical. The website is easy to navigate, and the zoom lessons are very effective. Still much to learn, but we are playing together and enjoying the practice! No, really, we are!

I cannot recommend these folks more highly. They are just the best.”
