What will I learn from trumpet lessons at the Academy?

In trumpet lessons, you will learn a variety of skills and techniques that will help you become a proficient trumpet player. Here are some key areas you can expect to learn in trumpet lessons:

Trumpet fundamentals: You'll learn the basics of trumpet playing, including proper embouchure (mouth position), breath control, and finger placement.

Technique and tone production: You'll develop proper trumpet playing techniques, such as articulation, tonguing, slurring, and vibrato, to produce a clear and expressive tone.

Music reading and notation: You'll learn to read sheet music specifically written for the trumpet, including understanding musical symbols, note values, dynamics, and articulations.

Range and flexibility: You'll work on expanding your range and developing flexibility in playing high and low notes, as well as improving your overall trumpet control.

Scales and arpeggios: You'll practice scales and arpeggios in different keys and patterns, which will enhance your technical proficiency and help you understand music theory concepts.

Transposition: Trumpet players often need to play music written for different transpositions. You'll learn how to transpose music to different keys, a skill essential for playing in different ensembles or accommodating different instruments.

Repertoire: You'll learn and perform a variety of trumpet repertoire, including classical solos, etudes, orchestral excerpts, jazz standards, and other genres of music.

Improvisation: If you're interested in jazz or other improvisational styles, your lessons may include guidance on improvisation techniques, chord progressions, and soloing.

Ensemble skills: You may have the opportunity to play in trumpet ensembles, brass bands, or orchestras, honing your ability to blend with other musicians, follow a conductor, and perform as part of a larger ensemble.

Performance skills: Trumpet lessons often include opportunities to perform in recitals, concerts, or competitions, helping you build confidence, stage presence, and the ability to connect with the audience through your trumpet playing.

Remember, the specific focus and curriculum of trumpet lessons may vary depending on your goals, the teacher's approach, and your skill level. It's important to communicate your aspirations and preferences with your trumpet teacher to tailor the lessons to your specific needs and interests.

Are There Recitals?

Absolutely! In December and June, our students get the chance to showcase their talent at an exiting venue with a Steinway Grand piano. We don't believe in charging our students any performance fees, and the admission is completely free. So you can invite as many guests as you’d like.

Testimonials

Warm service with great instructors. My teacher breaks down things in a way that's consistent with the way I think -- that's attention to detail that's hard to come by!
